Experience the collection in a new way
The National Trust commissioned us to create a virtual gallery showcasing paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds, a leading figure in 18th-century British art and the first president of the Royal Academy of Arts.
This project offers an innovative way to share the National Trust’s collection, bringing together paintings from locations across the UK into a single virtual gallery, where visitors can explore Sir Joshua’s artistic development and influence.
Creating the experience
Our team handled the entire project, transforming the materials provided by the client—artwork photographs, style guide, and wall text—into a cohesive virtual gallery. With only 17 paintings spanning four time periods, we faced the challenge of designing a gallery that felt intimate yet full. To achieve this, we used various colour palettes and architectural details while paying special attention to the lighting to add depth and character to the room. The environment was built in Unreal Engine 5 because of its powerful rendering capabilities. We also used Maya for 3D modelling of the environment and painting frames.
Moyosa Spaces v1.1
This project also leveraged Moyosa Spaces v1.1, the latest update to our platform for building virtual galleries. The biggest improvement is a free teleport functionality which simplifies navigation by allowing users to click/tap anywhere on the environment to move around the space. We also brought updates to the info panel design and starting screen. These enhancements, combined with other behind-the-scenes upgrades, created an improved experience for the visitors.
Honouring Sir Joshua’s legacy
This virtual gallery represents a significant step in making National Trust’s collection more accessible and interactive. By blending thoughtful visual design with cutting-edge technology, we created a unified space that brings Sir Joshua Reynolds’ work to life for a wider audience. We look forward to seeing how this project is received and to exploring future collaborations with the National Trust.
